THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.”

“Logan agreed.”

“He agreed?”

“He said she was right.”

I looked down at Ethan.

“So he stopped looking?”

“No.”

Robert reached into his coat.

From an inside pocket, he removed a folded envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Joanna.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Logan’s.

My throat tightened.

“What is that?”

“He gave it to me six weeks ago.”

“Why do you have it?”

“He asked me to keep it until he found a way to speak to you properly. Then he changed his mind and asked me to mail it.”

“Did you?”

“I tried.”

Robert turned the envelope over.

A postal label was attached.

RETURN TO SENDER.

My old apartment address was written beneath it.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The nurse quietly left the room, perhaps deciding we needed another minute.

I reached for the envelope.

Robert handed it to me.
