THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

It felt heavier than paper should.

“Did you read it?”

“No.”

I turned it over again.

The seal was intact.

“Where is Logan now?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“That doesn’t sound like you.”

“He took a temporary construction job about two hours north. He said he needed to save enough money to rent a place. He calls occasionally.”

“When was the last time?”

Robert’s expression shifted.

“Yesterday morning.”

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know I was due soon?”

“He knew the approximate date.”

I stared at him.

Robert looked almost embarrassed.

“He asked about hospitals.”

My pulse quickened.

“What does that mean?”

“He knew which hospital you had originally planned to use, but he wasn’t sure whether you had changed arrangements after moving.”

I glanced around the room.

Then back at him.

“Does he know you work here?”

“Of course.”

A strange possibility entered my mind.
