Robert nodded.

“She intended to tell him herself when he was older. She believed children should grow up knowing where they came from, but every year she found another reason to wait.”

“Why?”

“Fear.”

The word had become a recurring character in this family.

“She worried that if Logan learned she wasn’t his biological mother, he would think their relationship had been false.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“No.”

Robert gave me a tired look.

“But neither did Logan leaving you because he was afraid he might someday leave.”

Point taken.

“When did he find out?”

“A few months after Margaret’s funeral. He found the adoption papers while we were sorting through documents.”

Fifteen years old.

Mother dead.

Relationship with father strained.

Then discovering the woman he thought had given birth to him was actually his aunt.

“He must have felt lied to.”

“He did.”
