THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

“Did you explain?”

“I tried.”

“And?”

“He asked who his biological father was.”

There it was.

Another layer.

“Who was he?”

“His name was Thomas Bell.”

“Was?”

“He died six years ago.”

“Did Logan ever meet him?”

“Once.”

Robert stood and walked toward the window.

“He found Thomas when he was twenty-one. I offered to go with him, but Logan refused.”

“What happened?”

“Thomas met him at a coffee shop.”

Robert’s reflection looked tired in the dark glass.

“They spoke for two hours.”

“Was it bad?”

“No.”

That surprised me.

“In some ways,” Robert continued, “I think that made it harder.”

“How?”

“Thomas wasn’t a villain. He wasn’t cruel. He wasn’t indifferent. He was simply a young man who had made a choice he later regretted and didn’t know how to reverse.”

I thought about Logan.

“That sounds familiar.”

Robert turned.

“Yes.”

Thomas had married years later and had two daughters.
