There were times our hands touched while reaching for the same bottle and neither of us pulled away immediately.
Still, I refused to rush.
One evening, nearly a year after Ethan was born, Logan asked me to walk with him.
Robert was watching Ethan.
We went to the small park beside the river.
Autumn had turned the trees gold.
For a while we walked without speaking.
Then Logan stopped near a bench.
“I want to ask you something.”
My stomach tightened.
“If that involves a ring, I’m pushing you into the river.”
He laughed.
“No ring.”
“Good.”
“Although I appreciate knowing your position.”
We sat.
He looked at the water.
“I want to know what we are.”
I had expected the question eventually.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s fair.”
“What do you want us to be?”
He considered his answer.
“Eventually?”
“Yes.”
“A family.”
“We already are.”
He smiled.
