THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

“I know.”

That answer pleased me more than I expected.

He continued.

“I would like to be your partner again someday. But I don’t want you to say yes because we have Ethan.”

“I wouldn’t.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“I also don’t want you to keep saying no because you think forgiving me means pretending I didn’t leave.”

That landed somewhere deeper.

For a long time, I watched leaves drift across the river.

“I don’t trust the man who left me,” I said.

“You shouldn’t.”

“But you aren’t acting like him anymore.”

Logan said nothing.

“I kept waiting for some moment when I would suddenly know everything was fixed.”

He smiled faintly.

“Did you find one?”

“No.”

“Neither did I.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe that isn’t how it works.”

He nodded.

“I don’t think it is.”

I reached for his hand.
